Located in Kunisaki, Oita Prefecture, this pair of weathered stone Nio guardian statues stands along a forest path among towering cedars, part of the Thirty Buddhas (Sanjubutsu) associated with the Kunisaki Peninsula. The peninsula is renowned for hundreds of rock-carved and stone Buddhist images scattered through its forests and cliffs, remnants of the ancient Rokugo Manzan tradition that fused Shinto mountain worship with Buddhism.
