Shrines · Shiga
Located in Takashima, Shiga Prefecture, on the western shore of Lake Biwa, Shirahige Shrine is considered the oldest shrine in the Omi region, founded roughly 2,000 years ago. Dedicated to Sarutahiko Okami, a deity of longevity and guidance, it is nicknamed the Itsukushima of Omi for its vermilion torii gate that appears to float on the lake, with Okinoshima island visible behind it. The gate is especially striking at sunset and is illuminated on weekend evenings.
