Shrines · Kyoto
Located in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto, Heian Jingū was built in 1895 to celebrate the 1,100th anniversary of the founding of Kyoto, as a reduced-scale replica of the ancient imperial palace. It is famous for its giant vermilion torii, one of the largest in Japan, and for its beautiful strolling gardens with weeping cherry trees and a covered bridge over a pond.
