Located in Naka Ward, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Nagoya Castle was built in 1610 on the order of Tokugawa Ieyasu to secure the Owari region, becoming the seat of the Owari Tokugawa clan, one of the three senior Tokugawa branch families. It is famed for the golden shachihoko, mythical tiger-headed dolphin ornaments believed to ward off fire, that crown its main keep and have earned the castle the nickname Kinshachi-jo. The original keep was destroyed in a 1945 air raid and rebuilt in concrete in 1959, while the Honmaru Palace was meticulously reconstructed in wood with gold-leaf interiors, reopening in 2018.
