Meiji Utsunoya Tunnel
明治宇津ノ谷隧道
Historic Sites · Shizuoka
Located on the Utsunoya Pass between Shizuoka and Fujieda, Shizuoka Prefecture, the Meiji Utsunoya Tunnel was completed in 1876 as one of Japan's first toll road tunnels, and later rebuilt in brick. Lit by warm lanterns, its 200-meter brick passage feels like a trip back in time, and it was the first tunnel in Japan registered as a tangible cultural property.
