Located in Oda, Shimane Prefecture, Iwami Ginzan is a former silver mine that, at its peak in the 16th and 17th centuries, produced a large share of the world's silver. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007, it lets visitors walk through the Ryugenji Mabu mine tunnel and stroll the preserved Edo-period streets of Omori town, all surrounded by forest.
