Located in Uki, Kumamoto Prefecture, Einoo Tsurugi Shrine is a Shinto sanctuary founded in 713 and dedicated to Wadatsumi no Kami, the god of the sea. It is famed for its torii gate standing directly in the Yashiro Sea, reachable on foot at low tide and strikingly lit at sunset. The shrine is also known for its unique stingray-shaped ema votive tablets and its link to the Shiranui, a rare mirage phenomenon that appears off the coast in late summer.
