Located in Nanto, Toyama Prefecture, Gokayama is a UNESCO World Heritage village celebrated for its gassho-zukuri farmhouses, whose steep thatched roofs were built to withstand heavy snowfall. Long isolated by surrounding mountains, the Suganuma and Ainokura hamlets preserve houses up to 400 years old, historically sustained by silk cultivation, washi papermaking, and gunpowder production. Together with nearby Shirakawa-go, Gokayama forms one of Japan's most iconic traditional mountain landscapes.
