Located in Kitashiobara, Fukushima Prefecture, Akanuma is one of the Goshikinuma, the Five Colored Ponds of Urabandai, formed after the 1888 eruption of Mount Bandai. Rich in iron, its water gives a reddish-brown tint to the plants along its shores, contrasting beautifully with the blue and emerald ponds along the same forest trail.
